01. Understand Volumetric Weight

Air freight charges are often based on volumetric weight, usually calculated as (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 6000. If the volumetric weight is higher than the actual weight, the higher figure is usually used for charging.

Air shipping is usually more suitable when speed matters most. It is often a better fit for smaller, lighter, or higher-value goods that need faster delivery.

03. Check Restricted Goods in Advance

Items such as batteries, liquids, powders, or other sensitive cargo may require special handling or may be restricted entirely. It is important to confirm this before arranging shipment.

Your calculated CBM gives a volume estimate, but it does not reflect real loading efficiency. In practice, some space is usually lost because of carton shape, pallet height, gaps, or uneven stacking.

02. Use Container Size as a Reference Only

As a rough reference, a 20GP container holds about 28 CBM and a 40HQ about 68 CBM. Actual usable space may be lower depending on how the cargo is packed and loaded.

03. Plan Ahead for Mixed Cargo

When shipping mixed-size cartons, loading order matters. Larger cartons usually go in first, while smaller cartons help fill gaps. Irregular items may require pallets, wooden crates, or extra loading support.

04. LCL Shipments Need Extra Protection

When goods are shipped by LCL, they are usually consolidated with other cargo and often palletized. Fragile or stack-sensitive goods should have stronger protection, warning labels, and proper dunnage to reduce damage risk.
