A Sourcing Day in Foshan

Furniture, home products and a few things we checked along the way.

Foshan is one of the first places that comes to mind when sourcing furniture and home products in China. Lecong, in Shunde, has a large concentration of furniture showrooms and suppliers, so it is possible to compare quite a few products in one trip.

On this visit, we were checking different categories for different buyer requirements — sofas, outdoor furniture, solid wood tables, massage chairs and bathroom products.

Sofas: same look, different product

When a buyer already has a reference photo, finding a similar sofa design is usually not difficult. The bigger differences are often in the specification — genuine leather or synthetic leather, frame, foam, dimensions, configuration and finishing.

Two sofas can look almost identical in photos and still be very different products and prices. So before comparing quotations, we first need to make sure we are actually comparing the same thing.

Outdoor furniture

We also looked at some rattan and outdoor furniture. Design is the first thing you notice, but for sourcing we also need to look at the frame, weaving, cushions and packing. For bulky furniture, packing size matters too. A lower unit price does not always mean a lower total cost once shipping is included.

Solid wood tables

Solid wood furniture is much easier to judge in person. Wood grain, surface finish, thickness and proportions often look quite different from supplier photos.

If a table looks promising, the next step is to confirm the wood species, construction, dimensions and export packing.
At this stage, the main question is simple: is this option worth taking further?

Massage chairs

We also checked a few massage chair models. This is a category where the outside appearance only tells part of the story. Functions, voltage, controller, warranty and spare parts can vary quite a lot between models.

For this visit, we were mainly looking at possible options. Any model that moves forward would need a proper specification check later.

Bathroom products

The last part of the visit included bathtubs, steam rooms and smart toilets. One supplier told us that Mexico and South Africa are among its main export markets. That does not automatically make the supplier the right choice, but it is useful information. For products such as smart toilets and steam rooms, voltage, plug type, functions, dimensions, packaging and market-specific requirements may all need to be checked before an order moves forward. Even a simple question like “Where do you usually export this product?” can tell us quite a lot.

What matters after a sourcing visit

A sourcing day like this can produce plenty of photos and prices very quickly. The useful part is deciding which products are actually close to the buyer’s request, which quotations are comparable, and which suppliers are worth following up with.

Finding a suitable product in a showroom is only the first step. If an option becomes serious, we may still need to confirm the supplier, specifications, samples, production arrangement or inspection requirements.

If you already have a reference photo, specification or purchasing list, you can send it to JXNUO and we can start with the first round of product and supplier research.
